Pre-conceptual Care……It Matters!

One of the many reasons for ‘’pre-conception detox’’ is that it could help provide a ‘healthier environment’ in which to fall pregnant but it may also help to reduce morning sickness. No one has the definite answer as to why one person has morning sickness and the next person sails through pregnancy without any issues. Some suggest morning sickness is the body’s way of protecting the growing baby from toxins, particularly in the first trimester when the fetus is most vulnerable. But a hormonal imbalance may also exacerbate morning sickness.

Sarah can work with you before you fall pregnant in order to help promote a healthy well-being, which in turn may help the process in falling pregnant. This could also help create a healthier environment in which your baby can grow.

Depending on lifestyle and overall level of health, Sarah generally suggests a 6 to 12 week pre-conception ‘’detox’’ period, before attempting natural conception or any form of assisted reproduction. What does it mean by detox? It certainly does not mean you need to travel to a retreat or spend hundreds of pounds on many of the “cleansing kits” you may have seen on the market. In fact the more seamlessly you can incorporate cleansing or a healthier way of living into your daily, weekly, or monthly routine, the more likely it becomes a lifelong habit.

Taking steps toward gradually strengthening the organs of digestion and elimination before attempting a pre-conception detox is really important. Sarah believes that getting the digestion in balance is important for steps towards good health, under any health circumstances. If we assault the organs of elimination (liver, bowel, kidneys) without strengthening them first, they may not be able to handle the heavy workload and we’ll end up feeling worse before we feel the benefits.

During a Nutritional Therapy-Functional Medicine consultation, Sarah will take a detailed case history to assess where there are areas of your health that need particular attention. Plus listen to your health aims and incorporate these into your programme. Functional testing may be suggested if it is felt necessary. In most cases Sarah does not need to see you weekly, her aim is to instead to give you the tools to start you on a journey to achieving your goals.

If you would like to know more about how Sarah could support you and/or your partner towards promoting fertility or any other health concerns you may have, please do get in touch. Sarah can be contacted on 07702 492302 or enquire at The Mews practice reception. Alternatively email her on info@mattersforhealth.co.uk

Nutritional Support in Pregnancy

Planning Planning for pregnancy is key to ensuring a healthy embryo. The longterm health of your baby as well as their future children is determined by the health of the egg and sperm prior to conception. It is therefore of great value for you and your partner to invest a minimum of 3 months (ideally more!) into your prenatal health to help shape your child’s future for the better and reduce the risk of pregnancy complications. Prior to pregnancy we encourage you to really focus on your diet to help increase vitamin and mineral levels substantially, reduce inflammation in the body and improve the gut microbiome in the hope of supporting your sex hormones and thyroid hormones specifically. This is vital for conception and the maintenance of early pregnancy. In addition, depending on your history we may encourage you to remove gluten, soy or dairy from the diet to reduce the overall burden of inflammation in the body in order to improve egg and sperm abundance and quality. Understanding Nutrients Although conception and pregnancy draws on all the mother’s nutrient stores, there are certain specific minerals that are exceptionally important as they support your thyroid and iron levels, two systems […]
